FAQ
Here are the answers to some of the questions often asked by young sailors who want to know more about us.
1. Can I join in some of your sailing events?
Yes if you are between the ages of 8-18, live in Kent or associated with a Kent based organisation. You can become a member by joining online on the membership page or at your first event.
2. Do I need any sailing experience?
Yes but only basic boat-handling skills and the ability to sail a triangular course in moderate conditions. It helps if you know how to rig your boat.
3. Actually, I am already quite good at sailing, is there anything in it for me?
KSSA provides valuable sailing experience for novices through to National standards in a fun, friendly, welcoming, safe environment.
4. So, how will I benefit from joining KSSA?
Every year we organise 6+ race training Saturdays, hold 3 racing Regattas, one camping weekend and a Team racing event. KSSA takes a Kent Team of young sailors to the National Championships every year. Look at our ‘Events’. on the website (or pick up a printed leaflet about KSSA events from your local sailing club).
5. Do I have to attend all the events?
No, but most young sailors enjoy these events so much that ‘keenies’ will not want to miss out on the fun on and off the water.
6. How much will it cost?
As KSSA is run by a committee of unpaid volunteers (mainly the parents of young sailors past and present!) each event has only a small charge to cover the day’s expenses such as rescue boat fuel, prizes and sometimes the coaching. Prices are given in advance on KSSA Events leaflet and on the website. Pre-entering and paying online is cheaper.
7. Where does the sailing take place?
At the Sailing Clubs of various coastal, river and inland waters around Kent. Our young sailors really enjoy the challenge of the variety of waters for gaining experience on tides, currents, windshifts launching in waves and starting techniques.
8. Do I need my own boat?
Most do use their own boat, but at some events there are boats that can be hired for a small charge. If you do not have a boat and would like to crew, then that is possible too.
9. Why are you so popular?
We give young people an opportunity to sail and make friends with other young people from around the county. The events are well managed by an experienced team of adults. Our priorities are to improve your sailing skills whilst looking after your personal safety on the water.
10. Can I join the KSSA team at the NSSA Inlands and Summer Regatta?
If you attend 2 KSSA events then you are eligible to join the KSSA Team at these NSSA events.
11. I have heard that sailing with KSSA can lead to greater things?
Many of our superstars are spotted by the RYA and move into squad training and racing at National and International levels!
