This coming Saturday we have an online coaching session for New Racers (in lieu of an actual sailing event). KSSA captain Charlie Baker will lead the session – this time facilitated through the ZOOM application (see below).

Charlie is promising a clear easily understood explanation of the rules and what to do and what to look out for in an easy to follow concise one hour session aimed specifically at junior sailors:

NEW RACERS COACHING

Lesson Objectives:
To introduce new sailors to racing
To encourage new sailors to race
To improve on some of the more experienced racers racing skills

Starting (20 mins)
Watch starting sequence video beforehand – explains basic principles of starting and the sequence of flags
Recap of content of starting video
Transits
– Explanation of what they are
– How to create one
– Problems and how to overcome these problems
Flags (Uniform, Black, Postponement, Abandonment)

Courses (15 mins)
Different types of courses that you may encounter
How to find which course you are using
Windward mark finding

Rules (15 mins)
Basic definitions
Port/Starboard
Windward/Leeward and proper course

HOW TO ATTEND:

This will be a Zoom meeting, so it will be essential to have the ZOOM application set up on your phone/tablet/computer. It’s a free application that easily found through a search of your Applications Store or through an online search (Google, etc).
