Autumn Training 3 – Chipstead Sailing Club 8th December, 2018
The photo says it all. Our 46 keen sailors who came to the third training session in the Autumn series were met by a strong 20 knot breeze with some very challenging gusts and steady drizzle.
After a quick brief by lead coach Gemma Gibson all ventured onto the water. Even the most experienced were met by challenging conditions and some very strong blasts of wind down the lake which eventually caught most of the fleets out with many capsizes. Everyone landed for an early lunch and warm up. Alex Head described the sailing as ‘survival rather than training’, a feeling echoed by most sailors.
Gemma and her team of DIs, Tara, Elliot and Sam, lead an afternoon of land-based activities based on starting and mark rounding preparation.
It was great to welcome 13 sailors from Kings School to our training and we hope to see more of them in 2019.
The day began with a number of our sailors receiving bursary and coaching awards from Tony Rowe of the RYA Committee who continue to support the sailors and activities of the KSSA.
Training was followed by our AGM. Thanks to all who were able to stay to support this. Youth Team Captains were announced as Pierce, Abbie and Evie who will be at events to act as mentors and support our younger sailors in 2019.
