Can Kent Team make it 4 in a row and win the Team Trophy again?

You are invited to represent KSSA as part of Kent Team. This year it is being held at Rutland Water Sailing Club in the Lake District. The event will have class racing for Topper, ILCA4 (Laser 4.7), ILCA6 (Laser Radial), Slow Handicap, Fast Handicap and Rookie Fleets. In order to join the Kent Team to represent KSSA, you will be expected to have competed in one or more KSSA events this year or were a regular KSSA attendee last year. Competitors new to the event are very much encouraged and the Rookie Fleet is for sailors in their first year of racing.

For those of you who have not attended an NSSA event before then here’s a quick guide to what’s it’s all about:

  • NSSA: National Schools Sailing Association – this is their annual regatta which attracts teams of sailors of all abilities from regions across the UK.
  • To enter as part of the KSSA team you need to be a member of the KSSA AND be a member of the NSSA (membership via their website).
  • KSSA do not select their team, all participating members are invited to be a part of the team.  All who sail earn points which count towards the team’s final score.
  • KSSA is always well represented by a team of between 20-30 sailors.
  • Sailing is fleet based with a Rookie Fleet for sailors in their first year of racing.
  • KSSA sailors are supported at the event by team manager Paddy Denby as well as our youth captains: Izzy, Joe and Sophie.
  • Families usually choose to camp, either at the event site or independently. KSSA have booked a campsite with availability for camping, caravans/campervans, details are available via a link on the entry form. 
  • After sailing there is a programme of evening activities for the sailors to socialise.

Entry Instructions

Please do not attempt to enter the event directly, this must be completed by KSSA.

Click here and complete one form for each sailor, this will allow us to collect all the information that is required by the event committee, If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the Team Manager. The deadline for entries is 16th June.

You must ensure that you have a current KSSA membership and each sailor is registered as an individual member with NSSA via their website, with NSSA membership number included on the entry form.

Payments – Once we have collated all the information we will send out instructions with the required payment amount which should be paid by bank transfer before the entry deadline.

2025 Summer Training, Regatta & Camp

All attendees: please read the arrival instructions (these will be emailed to everyone entered).

Our summer fun training, camp and regatta weekend is back and with a change of venue this year at Downs Sailing Club. Open to ALL KSSA sailors but also essential preparation for anyone that will be competing as part of the Kent Team at the NSSA Regatta at Rutland Water Sailing Club later in July. Please come along even if you’re not going to NSSA. Enter both days, or just one. BTW, if you haven’t already heard, Downs SC will be hosting the NSSA regatta in 2026. So all the more reason to come along and get familiar with the water and conditions. 

SATURDAY:

  • Coaching for all.
  • Late afternoon: Littlefield Memorial Race – this is an all-comers race, open to all youth, coaches, parents and veteran sailors. Sign up on the day with a donation to the Kent Air Ambulance in lieu of entry fee. Click here to download the entry form (only required for non-KSSA entrants or for KSSA entrants where there are changes of boat/rig/helm/crew from the main event entry). Please bring this with you or can be filled in on the day.

SUNDAY:

This is a friendly competition open to all our youth sailors. Coaching will be provided for the back-markers.

REGISTRATION: from 08:30 Saturday (and Sunday if you weren’t there Saturday).

BRIEFING: There will be sailor briefings at 10:00 on Saturday and 09:30 on Sunday. Please be changed and have boats rigged ready to go.

DRINKS BOTTLES: please bring your own refillable drinks bottle, rather than buying plastic bottled drinks!

ARRIVAL: UPDATE – PLEASE READ THE ARRIVAL AND PARKING INSTRUCTIONS HERE.  Smaller boats, i.e. Toppers can be kept on their launching trollies and there will be matting down to the shoreline to help with access across the beach. Larger boats can be transferred to sledges which will be made available on the day. There are winches at the top of the beach to pull boats back up.

COACHES & HELPERS: The staffing of the event will be by the adults of KSSA & DSC with coaches afloat in some RIBs to assist the less confident sailors. Parents will be especially welcome on the shoreline to help their children with launch and recovery.

CAMPING: Please bring your tents. Tents only and nothing too grand please. This will be in the dinghy park. Find a patch of grass or area or area on the pebbles.

CATERING: There are a variety of meal options available for the weekend including meal packages. You are of course welcome to bring your own food, picnic etc. The meal packages must be pre-booked for the galley to plan anticipated numbers. This is available for adults and sailors (adults/children same price). These can be booked as part of event entry or on their own but must be booked online prior to entry closing date (Wednesday 2nd July). For anyone that doesn’t book one of the packages, we can offer limited snacks on both days (toasties/baps etc) and hot/cold drinks to purchase individually. Packages are:

Both days package: £30 a head will provide meals as follows:

Self-service Hot drink (tea/coffee/hot choc) station and soft drinks available (squash/water) all day.

Saturday lunch – choice of
1) ‘Loaded jacket potato’ with 2 x fillings including: chilli/tuna/beans/roasted veg/cheese with side salad.
2) selection pizza slices & side salad.
Followed by cake/ fruit.

Saturday supper BBQ:
1) meat option: includes Burger, sausages & BBQ chicken.
2) plant based: veggie & halloumi kebabs, Quorn sausages
3) pescatarian: salmon & veggie & halloumi kebabs.

All served with potato wedges & selection salad.
Followed by ice cream/cornetto.

Sunday Breakfast – choice of cereal on table & fruit juice (apple/orange)
1) Hot option: Choice of Breakfast BAP, choice of 2 fillings. E.g. bacon, egg, sausage, tomato.
2) continental breakfast: Yoghurts, Pastries (croissants/Danish/waffles) & fruit kebab sticks.

Sunday lunch
1) lasagne
2) veggie pasta
Both served with garlic bread & side salad.
Followed by cake/ fruit.

Saturday evening BBQ only: £10

The club bar will be open periodically over the weekend and Saturday evening to socialize and put the world to rights.

2025 All Girl Coaching with Margate YC

A unique event to promote girls sailing. Female coaching with three groups, beginner, intermediate and advanced. All girls will sail in double handed boats supplied by the host club, Feva’s and Laser 2000s being the main fleets. This years sees a change of venue to sunny Margate hosted by our friends at Margate Yacht Club.

ARRIVAL: Please aim to arrive at 08:30. We will meet at the boat park for sign-in and intros, we will all head to the clubhouse together to get changed. The boat park is a right turn after the Turner Gallery. You can park directly next to Margate Yacht Club for £7.50 a day. Free parking is slightly further down the road behind the Winter Gardens, this can get taken very early so cannot be relied on.

CATERING: Breakfast rolls and hot and cold drinks in the morning. Lunch can be ordered in the morning in the clubhouse or feel free to bring your own.

ENTRY: Numbers are limited, we will be offering 22 spaces to book, first come, first served opening Saturday 17 May, Entries will close on the Wednesday prior to the event, or when full. Entry for this special event is £30 per sailor. You must enter and pay for this event online in advance using the WebCollect link below. This is always a very popular event. Book early to avoid disappointment. If the event is full, please contact us if you would like to be added to the wating list. First regatta of the season at Medway Yacht Club. This is a friendly competition open to all our youth sailors. Coaching will be provided for the back-markers. Rookie fleet for newer racers with own start and shorter course.

2025 Topper Team Racing – Rescheduled

This is the rescheduled Team Racing event from 14th June. Original entries have been carried forward, if you entered a team before you should not re-enter. Entry for the remaining available spaces will open on Saturday 30 August and will close at midnight on the Wednesday prior to the event.

At Westbere Lake, Sturry, Nr Canterbury

Arrive by 09:00. There will be a briefing at 09:30

Please be aware: Access to Westbere Lake is via the Brett Quarry entrance. The gate will be open from 8am – 9.15am and access cannot be guaranteed after this time.

Not Team Raced Before?

  • This is the perfect event for you!
  • No team racing experience required, full briefing of rules, tactics, scoring and course will be given on the day.

What is team racing?

  • A chance to sail as a team with your friends
  • 3 sailors from your team will sail in each race
  • Everyone sails the same Toppers provided by Kings School SC
  • Short races in a league system lasting all day

How to join in?

  • Make a team of 3 or 4 who can confidently sail a triangular course to make your team
  • Open to ALL sailors – not just Topper sailors
  • Costs: Entry per team £40 (3 or 4 sailors)
  • Bring a picnic. There are no catering facilities at Westbere.
  • PLEASE bring drinking water. There is none available on site.
  • If your team wins, you will be invited to sail at the NSSA Single Handed Team Racing event later in the year

ENTRY: You must enter and pay for this event online in advance using the WebCollect link below. This is a popular event and we can only include a maximum of 12 teams. Any more than that and there would not be time to complete all the races. Please can we ask that you only submit 1 or 2 teams per club initially. This will make it fairer so that more clubs to participate. If you would like to enter further teams, please contact us and we’ll put you on a waiting list. If all spaces are not filled one week before the event then we will allocate additional teams, one per club, first come first served. Entry will close when all spaces are filled or at midnight on the Wednesday before the event. 2025 New Racers

KSSA New Racers event is specially designed for young people with little or with very limited racing experience and expertise. Please come along, even if you don’t have your own boat (see below). If you’re a hot shot racer, attending class and regional events, then this event is probably not for you. Please see our other regattas and coaching events.

COACHES & HELPERS: The staffing of the event will be by the adults of KSSA & Martello Lakes Sailing with senior KSSA sailors coaching afloat in RIBs. Parents will be especially welcome on the shoreline to help their children with launch and recovery.

FACILITIES: Martello Lakes is in a secure site and the access gates will be open 08.30-09.30hrs. Should you arrive later, please park up and use the pedestrian access gate – it’s only a short walk. When you enter, you will be asked by the warden whether you are going on the water, or you are not. Please make sure that only the sailors and those actually going afloat are counted.

Toilets will be open throughout the day but there are very limited changing facilities. There will be sheltered places to change & store your clothes if you are not able to arrive ready to go afloat.

Parents may wish to bring a fold away chair.

Sorry NO dogs onsite

SAILING BOATS: Boat types likely to be taking part include Toppers, Teras, Optimists, Topazs, Picos and Feva dinghies. Please bring your own boat if you are able, but there a few Toppers, and Optimists (age 8-10 only) dinghies available to use on a first come first served basis. Enter early to reserve yours! No Lasers please! If you can sail a Laser you should be attending our other regattas for more experienced sailors.

Parents help with moving & rigging / de-rigging boats on the shore will a great assistance.

REFRESHMENTS: Please bring a picnic for lunch and between action ‘nibbles’. We hope to offer hot drinks.

Be Prepared for Colder Weather: Winter can be a great time for sailing; what else would you be doing? But it is cold; wear the right gear and you’ll have a great day on the water and come in feeling invigorated. Don’t wear enough or the wrong type of clothing and you’ll likely come in cold, wet and miserable, very quickly. Don’t ruin your day, make sure you have got an adequate winter wet-suit or dry-suit. Thermal layers, hats, hotsocks, winter gloves etc are all a must. If you’ve not got the right gear, you can also often pick up kit in really good condition. Ask around the sailing club, kids do have a habit of growing quickly. Also pass your kit on to others to help keep costs down. There are dinghy groups on Facebook where you can often buy cheap kit, and you can sometimes find a bargain on eBay etc.

On arrival: Approaching the main gate along Quarry Grove you will pass a row of houses on your right, please mind your speed, the main gate will be open so drive on through and follow signs to Water Sports our team will direct you to parking.

2024 Autumn Training 3 and AGM

The KSSA 2024 AGM will follow as soon as possible after sailing.

BRIEFING: There will be a briefing (rigged and changed) at 10:00.

TRAPEZE BOATS: Please note, Chipstead SC is based on a fairly small lake and unfortunately cannot accommodate trapeze dinghies.

CATERING:  Lunches must be pre-ordered by Wednesday 20th November. A link to the order form has been emailed to all entrants. Please contact us if you don’t have the link.
